Rebbe Elimelech's Prayer
(Adarabbah) Rebbe Elimelech of Lyzensk was one of the great Chassidic masters of the late 18th century - and his greatness is largely due to his concern for his fellow Jews. Legends abound about how he and his equally famous brother, Reb Zushya of Hanipoli, would tramp through the Galician countryside in an effort to ransom poor Jews taken captive by their ruthless gentile overlords. But Rebbe Elimelech was also concerned about freeing the souls of his disciples - freeing them from petty jealousies and hatreds - so that they could serve their Maker with a pure heart. One of his best known works is a prayer commonly referred to as Adarabbah. In this prayer, which is recited before the daily Morning Prayer Service, Rebbe Elimelech beseeches God to forgive us for our many failings and to give us the wisdom and the strength to be good Jews. The prayer concludes with a passionate plea that we be saved from falling captive to jealousy - a destructive emotion that destroys marriages, friendships, business partnerships and relations between the various groups that comprise the Jewish people. But even more (Adarabbah), Rebbe Elimelech asks God to grant us the ability to see only the good in others. May Rebbe Elimelech's prayer inspire us all to see only the good qualities of our family members, friends, neighbors and fellow Jews. But even more, may God reward our efforts to achieve peace in our homes and our surroundings by bestowing His blessing of peace on all the House of Israel and on His city Jerusalem.
